Bypass Surgery

If medical therapy or interventional procedures (balloon dilation, stent implantation) do not have the desired therapeutic success, bypass surgery may be performed. The strategy is to circumvent the stenoses in a coronary vessels with a bypass grafts, when ever possible in a complete arterial approach utilizing both internal mammary areries and avoiding vein grafts.

At the Albertinen Cardiovascular Centre about 850 bypass operations are performed each year. Here about 95% of all patients are supplied exclusively with bilateral internal mammary areries in t-graft technique. Our patients benefit from the complete arterial approach thru excelent long term patency rates.

At the Albertinen Cardiovascular Centre about 70% of isolated coronary bypass surgery is perfomed without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. From this so-called "off-pump technique" the patients benefit especially in higher age and/or severe comorbidity.

How it is done

An operation can be planned depending on the severity of the disease or even performed as an emergency. Typically, you and your GP about eight to fourteen days before the planned operation on the recording date will be notified in writing. On admission any missing investigations and laboratory tests are still carried out. After the initial examination by the ward doctors will be prepared by the nursing team for the operation and provides detailed information on the planned schedule.

Most finds the planned operation on the day rather than after admission to the hospital. However, since many emergency patients in Albertinen Cardiovascular Center to be operated on, the date can sometimes be delayed by one day. We ask this to your understanding.

The day before the surgery can find detailed reconnaissance talking with the surgeon and the anesthesiologist instead of the planned surgery and anesthesia.

On operation day you get about an hour before you are brought to the operating room, tablets, of which you are very tired. You are then driven to the bed to the operating theater and taken there by the anesthesia team in receiving.

After the operation

Typically, you spend a day or two on the cardiac surgical intensive care unit. You will then be transferred to the intermediate care unit or the general ward A2. The entire hospital stay is about 8 to 10 days. Decisive for a good course is your cooperation with the mobilization. Our goal is to help you to as quickly as possible regain your independence. The purpose of a good coordination of your subsequent rehabilitation stay. This is planned with us during the recording with you and your family. To ensure a continuous supply even after hospitalization, the Albertinen Heart Center provides integrated care to many patients. Inform yourself in advance of your stay on these options with your health insurer.
